2 universities to miss South Padre Island spring break party

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP) — The college student invasion on South Padre Island for one of the largest spring break parties in the country could look different this year after two large Texas universities set their breaks for different weeks.
The San Antonio Express-News reports that some venues are welcoming the news that the University of Texas at Austin and Texas State University scheduled their spring breaks for March 16-24. This means that a combined 90,000 students won’t be able to attend Texas Week, which brings major artists to perform on the island.
Event organizers say the change will smooth out attendance over a longer period, a benefit since the island’s spring break turnout has drawn safety complaints in recent years.
Spokesmen for both universities say they didn’t intentionally set their breaks for different weeks.
