Flambeau Parade adds a twist to Fiesta San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – The Fiesta Flambeau Parade is bringing a Twist to Fiesta this year. Music and dance icon Chubby Checker will be the grand marshal of what’s touted as the largest illuminated night parade in the country.

“The theme this year is Reflections of Music Past, so we thought Chubby Checker would be the perfect grand marshal,” said Trina Guevara with the Fiesta Flambeau Parade Association.

Ernest Evans, known as Chubby Checker, popularized many dance styles, including the Pony and the Fly, but his hit cover “The Twist” took the country by storm in 1960.

“Everybody still knows how to do the twist,” said Guevara.

To prove her point, those who gathered at the Embassy Suites Riverwalk for the big announcement got up and danced The Twist to celebrate.

“I do not recall ever doing The Twist at a meeting before, but this year’s Grand Marshal of Fiesta Flambeau is Chubby Checker! This is going to be a Hoot,” Fern Osman Burney,  President of the Woman’s Club of San Antonio posted on Facebook.
